Hidden Perks on No-Annual-Fee Credit Cards You Are Probably Not Using

The average no-fee cardholder leaves $200-$400 per year in unused benefits on the table.

Most people think of their no-fee credit card as a simple rewards tool: swipe, earn cash back, done. But many $0/year cards include insurance benefits and purchase protections that can save you hundreds of dollars. You are already paying for these perks through the card's merchant fees. You might as well use them.

Perk Deep-Dives

Cell Phone Protection

This is the single most valuable hidden perk on no-fee cards. If your phone is damaged or stolen, the card will reimburse you for repair or replacement costs. The Wells Fargo Active Cash and Chase Freedom Flex both include this benefit.

Coverage Limit

$600 - $800 per claim

Deductible

$25 - $50 per claim

How to activate: Pay your monthly phone bill with the card. That is it. No enrollment needed.

What is covered: Theft, accidental damage (cracked screen, water damage). Covers you and anyone on your phone plan.

What is NOT covered: Loss (you misplaced it), cosmetic-only damage, phones over $1,000 in value (coverage gaps).

How to file a claim: Call the benefits administrator (number on back of card). Provide a police report for theft. Submit a repair estimate or replacement receipt. Claims are typically processed within 15-30 business days.

Annual value: A typical iPhone screen repair costs $229-$329. If you file one claim per year, this perk alone is worth $180-$280 after the deductible. That makes your $0/year card effectively worth negative hundreds of dollars.

Purchase Protection

Items bought with your card are protected against damage or theft for 90-120 days after purchase. This is like a free short-term insurance policy on everything you buy.

Coverage Window

90-120 days

Per-Claim Limit

$500 - $10,000

Annual Limit

$25,000 - $50,000

Example: You buy a $400 laptop bag that gets stolen from your car 60 days later. File a purchase protection claim, provide a police report, and the card reimburses the full amount. This applies to electronics, clothing, furniture, and most other physical goods purchased with the card.

Extended Warranty

Adds 1-2 additional years to the manufacturer's warranty on items bought with the card. Most effective on electronics and appliances where extended warranties from the retailer cost $50-$200.

Extra Coverage

1-2 additional years

Max Original Warranty

3-5 years

How to claim: When the manufacturer's warranty expires and the item breaks during the extended period, call the card's benefits line. Provide the original receipt and proof the manufacturer's warranty has lapsed. The card will pay for repair or replacement up to the original purchase price.

Rental Car Insurance (CDW)

Collision Damage Waiver coverage when you decline the rental company's insurance and pay with your card. This can save $15-$30 per rental day.

Coverage Type

Secondary (most cards)

Daily Savings

$15 - $30/day

Important distinction: most no-fee cards provide secondary coverage, meaning it kicks in after your personal auto insurance pays. The Chase Freedom Flex is a notable exception: it provides primary coverage on rental cars, which means it pays first and your personal insurance rates are not affected. For a $0/year card, this is exceptional.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

Many no-fee cards charge a 3% fee on international purchases. But several do not. If you travel abroad even once per year, choosing a no-FTF card saves real money.

Free FICO Score Access

Most no-fee cards now include free FICO score monitoring. This is not a third-party estimate (like Credit Karma's VantageScore). It is your actual FICO score, updated monthly, directly from the credit bureau. Cards that include this: Discover it (TransUnion FICO), Chase Freedom cards (TransUnion FICO via Credit Journey), Citi Double Cash (Equifax FICO), and Wells Fargo Active Cash (TransUnion FICO).

How to Actually Use These Perks

1

Find your benefits guide

Log into your card issuer's website. Search for "benefits guide" or "card benefits." Download the PDF. This document lists every benefit in detail.

2

Set up automatic bill payments

Pay your phone bill with the card that has cell phone protection. Pay for electronics and big purchases with the card that has the best purchase protection.

3

Keep your receipts digitally

Take photos of receipts for big purchases. You will need these if you file a purchase protection or extended warranty claim.

4

Decline rental car insurance

When renting a car, decline the CDW/LDW at the counter. Pay with a card that includes rental car coverage. Save $15-$30 per day.

5

File claims promptly

When something goes wrong, call the number on the back of your card within the coverage window. Claims are typically processed in 15-30 business days. The key is knowing you have the benefit before the situation arises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to enroll in these perks?
In most cases, no. Benefits like purchase protection, extended warranty, and rental car insurance are automatic when you pay with the card. The one exception is cell phone protection, which requires that you pay your monthly phone bill with the card. There is no separate enrollment form.
How long do claims take to process?
Most claims are resolved within 15-30 business days after you submit all required documentation. Cell phone protection claims may take slightly longer (up to 45 days) if the benefits administrator needs to verify the claim with your carrier.
Can I use these perks on items I bought for someone else?
Yes, as long as you purchased the item with the card. Purchase protection and extended warranty apply to the item, not the user. Cell phone protection covers anyone on the phone plan that you pay for with the card.
Are these perks as good as a paid extended warranty from the store?
Often better. Card-based extended warranties are free, cover a wide range of products, and are backed by major insurers. Retail extended warranties cost $50-$200 and often have more exclusions. The main limitation is that card warranties typically only add 1-2 years beyond the manufacturer warranty, while retail plans can extend coverage to 3-5 years total.
