How to activate your card benefits

Read the benefits guide

Every card ships with a benefits guide that details exactly what is covered. Most people never read it. Download it from your card's benefits portal online - it is usually a 30-50 page PDF. The cell phone protection and extended warranty sections are the most commonly overlooked and most commonly valuable.

Registration is usually automatic

Most card benefits activate automatically when you use the card for the relevant purchase. Extended warranty and purchase protection require no registration. Cell phone protection requires paying your phone bill with the card. Trip cancellation requires booking the trip with the card.

How to file a claim

Call the benefits number on the back of your card or visit the card's benefits portal. For purchase protection and extended warranty, you will need the original receipt and your card statement showing the purchase. For cell phone protection, you will need a police report if the phone was stolen.

Benefits change without notice

Card issuers can and do modify or remove benefits. Chase removed price protection from all consumer cards in 2018. Citi removed trip cancellation from most cards. Always verify current benefits with your card issuer before assuming a benefit is still active on your specific card.
